A little update on the site…

Dear readers:

Since it has been a while since I’ve posted, I just wanted to send a little update to say that the blog is still live, just on maternity leave! I have a new baby, Stella, who has been listening to plenty of Paulinho da Viola, but who will probably not allow me to translate any of it until she makes it into daycare. I really appreciate the new subscribers I’ve continued to see signing up, and the kind comments that always brighten my day when I get them. Thanks so much, abraços e até breve!

  1. Heads up for a special guest edition of Musical Migrations on KSQD 90.7-89.7-89.5 FM (on air in the Monterey Bay Area, or ksqd.org streaming) Thursday 2-20-25, 10 PM-midnight. After some multi-national jazz, the focus turns to the all-new Volume 16 of Brazil Calling, with lots of contributions from other parts: Jamaica and the Black Atlantic at large, New York City, Portugal, Italy, and the Southern Cone. And as always DJCP has a few surprises in store. Post-broadcast in the Two-Week Archive under the Listen menu on the station’s website. Enjoy!

  2. What a wonderful site! I wish you had been teaching at Oberlin when I was a student there.

    Thanks,
    Alex

      1. A long time ago: I graduated in ’93.

Thanks so much for doing this. When you have time to make entires again, I’d love to read your translations of, and thoughts about, the songs on “Clube da Esquina.” Also fascinated with a lesser known duo called Burnier & Cartier (Luiz Bonfa was Octavio Burnier’s uncle), which made two wonderful albums in ’74 and ’76… though I’m not totally sure about their lyrics’ profundity 🙂

  3. Tune into a radiophonic tribute to the legendary multi-instrumentalist and prolific composer Hermeto Pascoal (1936-2025) on Sounds of Brazil on Monday, September 15, 2025, 10 PM – midnight PDT. Hear his own music from the 1960s to the 2020s, as well as numerous covers and homages. Acoustic and electric alike. On The Squid. KSQD 90.7 89.7 89.5 FM (Monterey Bay Area) and ksqd.org streaming worldwide. Post-broadcast the show will be in the Two-Week Archive (Listen tab on the website). All with DJ CP (Charles Perrone). Bem-vind@s tod@s! Welcome one and all! Help us celebrate the legacy of a sui generis talent. RIP H.P.
