A little update on the site…

Dear readers:

Since it has been a while since I’ve posted, I just wanted to send a little update to say that the blog is still live, just on maternity leave! I have a new baby, Stella, who has been listening to plenty of Paulinho da Viola, but who will probably not allow me to translate any of it until she makes it into daycare. I really appreciate the new subscribers I’ve continued to see signing up, and the kind comments that always brighten my day when I get them. Thanks so much, abraços e até breve!

My name is Victoria Broadus and I'm currently living in Oberlin, Ohio, where I teach Latin American History at Oberlin College. I learned Portuguese while working toward a Master's degree at Georgetown back in 2008/09, which is also when I began traveling to Brazil. I started this site in late 2011 when I was living in New York City, missing Brazil but fortunate to be surrounded by lots of great opportunities to hear Brazilian music. I wanted to share that music with friends and family and any other readers out there who wonder what the songs they're listening to are saying, and why.  From 2012-2017 I lived in Brazil -- first São Paulo for a year,  then Rio for nearly five -- before coming back to the United States for my PhD program at Georgetown, which I completed in June 2023. Please let me know if there is a song you would like translated or would like to hear more about. You can leave a comment here or anywhere else on the site, or on the Facebook page.   8. Heads up for a special guest edition of Musical Migrations on KSQD 90.7-89.7-89.5 FM (on air in the Monterey Bay Area, or ksqd.org streaming) Thursday 2-20-25, 10 PM-midnight. After some multi-national jazz, the focus turns to the all-new Volume 16 of Brazil Calling, with lots of contributions from other parts: Jamaica and the Black Atlantic at large, New York City, Portugal, Italy, and the Southern Cone. And as always DJCP has a few surprises in store. Post-broadcast in the Two-Week Archive under the Listen menu on the station’s website. Enjoy!

      1. A long time ago: I graduated in ’93.

        Thanks so much for doing this. When you have time to make entires again, I’d love to read your translations of, and thoughts about, the songs on “Clube da Esquina.” Also fascinated with a lesser known duo called Burnier & Cartier (Luiz Bonfa was Octavio Burnier’s uncle), which made two wonderful albums in ’74 and ’76… though I’m not totally sure about their lyrics’ profundity 🙂
