Musicians: Peterson – surdo; Cacau de Castro – pandeiro & caixa; Marcio Vanderlei – cavaquinho; Mauricio Massunaga – seven-string guitar; Julio Florindo – bass guitar. Trapiche Gamboa is a gorgeous bar in the Gamboa neighborhood, in the port zone where samba got its start in Rio de Janeiro. Samba da Ouvidor on Saturday, 5 July 2014. This samba happens semi-regularly, usually every other Saturday between around 6 pm and midnight at the corner of Rua do Ouvidor and Rua do Mercado, right near Praça XV. Gabriel Cavalcante (of Samba do Trabalhador) sings a beautiful mix of well known sambas and older, more obscure sambas de raiz. It gets crowded so try to get there on the earlier end and grab a spot near the music. Follow their Facebook for announcements about when the next roda will happen: http://www.Facebook.com/sambadaouvidor. Rua do Mercado w/ Rua da Ouvidor, near Praça XV.

26 June 2014: Thursday night roda de samba at Bip Bip Bar (pronounced beepy-beepy) in Copacabana. The tiny bar opened in 1968 is an institution in Rio; musicians – who play for free – roll in throughout the night, rotate in and out of the table and switch instruments. The owner Alfredinho sits at a table next to them tallying up people’s drinks. The bar works on an honor system: grab a drink from the fridge, tell Alfredinho to add it to your tab. If you leave a tip -“caixinha” – it will go to the massive annual Christmas lunch Alfredinho serves for the area’s poor and homeless. You’ll hear everything from classic sambas from the early 20th century to new unreleased sambas by local composers, including many songs that are rarely performed in Rio. But go prepared to keep pretty quiet — Alfredinho yells a lot when the crowd gets too loud for his taste. There’s also samba on Fridays and Sundays (with mostly different musicians), choro on Mondays and Tuesdays, and bossa nova on Wednesdays. Rua Almirante Gonçalves, 50 – Copacabana.
